Beautiful Doodles has over 100
illustrations by Nellie Ryan for the
young artist (or non-artist!) to
complete and
create.
Watching my own daughter
draw when she was
younger was an
inspiration. She always said
“I can do that!” When we went to the
Mattisse museum in Nice, she criticised his
cut-outs, chose a couple of
postcards including a
nude and one of his
portraits and then produced her own
copies – which were
surprisingly good! However as she
grew older she lost that
wonderful confidence and was
more likely to greet
art homework with a
groan and a
sigh.
She’s
not the only one –
children in my French classes,
drawing objects to
match the word were just the
same. So anything that
boosts a child’s confidence and
creativity is a bonus and this
book does just that - although, inexplicably it’s for
“girly girls”.
Examples include: The latest
catwalk fashion – with a model drawn ready for the
young artist to add clothes, designing
earrings, giving
wings to butterflies and adding
fish to an
aquarium.
Beautiful Doodles would make an
excellent present - a great book for
primary school aged girls – no
skills or experience
necessary!
The Art Doodle Book is probably the
next step on from Beautiful Doodles (although
both books are billed for
adults as well the
latter wouldn’t
appeal to me). Here you are
offered parts of works of
art – from 26
world-famous artists
including Chagall, Picasso, da Vinci and Wharhol – to
complete as you see
fit or you see a finished work and have the
space to create your
own.
Four pages are
devoted to each of the
featured artists and there is a short
biography to put them into
context. An excellent
introduction to art history and
great for children from about
nine or ten onwards – and adults!
The Art Doodle Book certainly
interested me and again would make an
fun as well as
educational gift.
Both books are published by
Michael O'Mara Books, if you would like to
