Drinkaware parents campaign

publication date: Oct 17, 2011

If you haven't already spoken to your pre-teens about alcohol the facts below might make you realise the time is ripe! In response to the research Drinkaware carried out they have produced an excellent leaflet that gives parents the facts, tips and guidance on how to broach the subject as well as the law and alcohol consumption by under 18s.

We have the Drinkaware leaflet for you to download at the end of this article.

Here are the key statistics revealed by the Drinkaware research:

  • Only 17 per cent of parents have a plan to talk to their children about alcohol
  • Nearly three quarters of children aged nine to 17 turn to their parents first for information and advice on drinking alcohol
  • 76 per cent of 16 to 17 year olds who have had an alcoholic drink have been drunk at least once
  • Every year over 20,000 under 18s are admitted to hospital as a result of drinking alcohol
  • 90 per cent of parents agree it is up to them to set a good example to their children through their own drinking
  • 61 per cent of young people think too many under 18s drink alcohol
  • 78 per cent of parents think it is appropriate for 15 to 17 year olds to drink alcohol
  • The average age of a child’s first unsupervised drink is just under 14 years old.
