On a recent trip to the Greek island of Kefalonia, I stayed at Pythos Studios in Svonronata. I had taken this break in order to have some uninterrupted time to continue writing my second crime novel (Dancers in the Wind will be published in October) and to catch up on my reading. I was expecting to be able to breakfast have a a few meals at the poolside bar but unfortunately this was completely closed up. On my first outing to find the supermarket (about 40 minutes' walk away) I say the signs for Dum Spiro's Spero Restaurant.
The restaurant has seating inside as well as the outside area which is adequately shaded for protection from the hot Greek sunshine. During my week's holiday I ate here four times. It is a busy restaurant but they treat everyone as special and I was impressed by the way that after my first meal they remembered I don't eat dairy and don't like taramasalata.
The meals are all cooked to order so you may have to wait a while for special orders. I tried various main courses including stuffed peppers and tomatoes, fish, chicken souvlaki and Greek salad. They were all excellent. My only comment would be that it would have been nice to dine with someone to share meals. House wine can be bought in carafes and half-carafes and there is a range of other wines and drinks. There is no children's menu as such but they could choose from the starters or share a main meal.
Dum Spiro's Spero restaurant is totally family-friendly. Plenty of highchairs and room for buggies or wheelchairs as necessary.
It is owned by Anna and Spiro who have twin baby girls who sometimes make an appearance.
There is a lovely relaxed ambiance and I was stunned the first evening when I asked Spiro to book me a taxi and he insisted on driving me back (as he subsequently did after each visit) with two other diners.
