What do you want in a baby soap/shampoo/nappy cream? I guess it’s not something I’d thought much about, except that I really hate the fake "baby" smell of most infant bath products and, like most parents, would rather feel that I’m using something that’s genuinely good for my baby’s skin and preferably not going to damage the planet too much.
Then I received my Green People samples and we have, as a family, been seduced by their loveliness. They are, however, more expensive than many of their non-organic equivalents, so maybe feel like a luxury rather than an essential when you’re on maternity pay – though all the products last well and are quite concentrated, so a little goes a long way. You definitely get quality - and they push that ethically- aware, wanting-to-do-the-right- thing button which new parents are particularly susceptible to! The gift pack would make a great present for new parents.
Baby Wash £5.99/150ml (available in camomile or lavender – we especially liked the relaxing smell of the latter) can be used both as a shampoo and bath wash, and we also used it as a bubble bath. It’s very mild, contains no horrible Sodium Laureth Sulphate or parabens, is organic, and both varieties smell lovely. I’m happy to use this as both shampoo and mild soap all over for my sensitive-skinned four-month-old. These products are highly concentrated, so you don’t need to use much. I liked this product so much that I’ve already bought more and will continue to use it.
Mum & Baby Moisturiser £8.69/150 ml was just lovely – the only problem is that as I was using it on my grown-up body as well as massaging Emma with it, it disappeared all-too quickly. It’s not greasy, is easily absorbed (so your baby doesn’t feel slippery after a massage), smells gorgeous and made both of us want to go to sleep after we’d used it. A really nice present for new mums.
Baby Salve £8.69/100ml has been used on sore bottoms, and seems to have the desired effect – neither Iris or Emma, however, is particularly plagued by nappy rash so I can’t confirm its healing powers. I also used a small amount on Emma’s cradle cap several evenings running and it seems to be working (this isn’t one of the salve’s advertised uses but I thought I’d experiment).
Organic Children Bath & Shower Lavender £6.49/200ml
is gorgeous, it has a really nice subtle scent, makes great bubbles and has an impressive list of pure ingredients that have led to its certified organic stamp. Toby used to have extremely sensitive skin as a baby and I will admit that I'd avoided all bubble baths for this reason. Now that he's tested these bubbles there really is no looking back! He has had no reaction to the product and the bath is not left slimy or slippery after use. I really like the fact that as it says on the pack “a little goes a long way, 200ml equals 600-800ml of most conventional products”.
Organic Children Sun Lotion spf25 Lavender £13.50 150 ml - this water-resistant factor 25 organic sun lotion passes the "white streak" test with flying colours. It is easy to apply, has a lovely smell of lavender and is completely free of colourants, artificial fragrances, lanolin, petrochemicals, propylene glycol, parabens and hormone- mimicking ingredients. Natural bees wax and olive oil provide the water-resistant base, and it is suitable to use on babies from six months old. I look forward to continuing to use this sun lotion.
