Zagreb is fast becoming the go-to destination for UK travellers looking for a city break getaway in Europe. With the abundance of trendy bars and restaurants, as well as a large number of cultural activities on offer, it is very easy for visitors to enjoy a city break that combines both nightlife and history. With Monarch’s new flight routes from London Gatwick and Manchester launching at the end of April, it is now more affordable and easier to fly to the Croatian capital.

Zagreb for families

The Croatian capital is a family friendly city with plenty to offer to satisfy both parents and children. Families should pay a visit to Maksimir Park, a short tram ride from the city centre and home to the Zagreb City Zoo. Inside the zoo, children can enjoy daily feeding times for the seals, sea lions and otters. After seeing the animals, families can wander around the park and lakes and children can enjoy the playground area.

In addition, those with slightly older children can hire bikes locally and experience a bike ride around the park.

Families will also enjoy a trip on Zagreb’s Funicular (pictured above) which connects the lower town with the upper town in one minute four seconds. It runs every ten minutes between 6:30am to 10pm daily. If you travel up the Funicular around midday, you will be at the top of the hill in time for Zagreb’s cannon fire at 12pm from the Lotrščak Tower. Tickets cost 5kuna (approximately £0.65).
