The Rules of Parenting by Richard Templar

The Rules of Parenting is presented as a book to entertain rather than instruct, and the tone is definitely set to amuse and engage the reader.

There are a good number of the every-day but bizarre tales which will ring true for anyone with children. That said, there is also plenty of sensible advice from an author with many years' experience of bringing up children.

The Rules of Parenting is laid out in ten sections, each including ten rules. It’s the sort of book which you would pick up now and then, rather than read in one go, perhaps when you’ve had a particularly bad day! It’s a book which will lift the spirits, and combined with some helpful and inspiring ideas, it should give parents a boost to start the next day on better footing!

The themes covered include “Staying Sane”, “Attitude”, “Discipline”, plus more specific topics like “School” and “Teenage”. With such a broad range of areas, it’s a bit hard to imagine who would feel this book was for them, but readers with children around age three through to eight would probably find this helpful.

Also, it is refreshing to read a parenting book written from the perspective of a father and I would imagine this would make the book appealing to male readers, perhaps given as a present by an exasperated partner!

In all, this is a cheerful read to keep on the bedside table as a comforter!
