The
teenage years can be difficult times both for the
young people in question and not least of all for the
parents themselves.
TEENAGERS! by Rob Parsons goes a long way to
alleviate parents
fears that they are
not alone in facing these
turbulent teenage years and that they should not feel as if they have
failed when
communication invariably
breaks down between them and their sons and daughters.
The book
emphasises the importance of
reassuring your
teenager that you are always
there for them to
offer love, support and
guidance throughout these
awkward times. The importance of the
parent’s role in boosting young people’s
self-esteem and
self-confidence is also dealt with throughout the book.
There are
several chapters dealing with
major topics such as
school, bullying, sex, the
internet and
drugs, all of which will feature in some way or other in
teenagers’ lives and parents need to be
informed about any issues relating to these.
There is also an
interesting chapter about the
actual physical and
developmental changes that take place in a
teenager’s brain, which research has shown has a
significant effect on their
behaviour and
emotional development.
I would
recommend every parent of a teenager
to read this book for it is highly
informative and they will be able to
identify with many of the
different scenarios. It can be read from
cover to cover very quickly or parents can simply read or re-read
short extracts, which may be
pertinent to the
particular situation that they are currently
experiencing with their teenager.
TEENAGERS! is an excellent, well-written,
jargon-free and easy to read book which will be
reassuring for the parents. I wish it had been around when my
eldeR daughter, now almost 20, hit the
teenage years! However, at least I have read it just before my
younger daughter reaches her
13th birthday!
