Judging by the
problems we see in the
UK at the moment with
young people who are totally
out of control and who see
guns and
knives as a way of
getting what they want, many
parents need help in
encouraging self-discipline in their children!
The
problem for many families is that bad or
ineffective parenting has also been the
experience of mothers and fathers
struggling to bring up their own offspring.
Raising a self-disciplined child attempts to redress this imbalance. Another interesting
facet is when parent's
experience problems with
just one of their children - nature over
nurture!
The
authors Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein are both
high-profile experts in the
US and for this book
draw heavily on the parenting
workshops and consultations they have run together. So most of the content is based on American
case studies.
Chapters include
Helping Your Child Take Control, Teaching Your Child to Solve Problems and
Encouraging Y our Child to Make a Difference. The authors cover everything from
"It's not fair!" to dealing with children with
special needs.
The problem, for this reviewer, is that the
wealth of
excellent advice and
strategies is embedded within the
case studies. So if you don't have the
time or inclination to read
Raising a Self-Disciplined Child from cover to cover is to go through the book
concentrating on the
cross-heads to find what is
pertinent for you.
Throughout the book are
pull-quotes that offer excellent
advice or
highlight the pitfalls of
parenting! For example:
"When you
discipline your children, consider whether your actions
nurture personal control or
contribute to a victim mentality."
Raising a self-disciplined child by Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein is published by McGraw Hill. If you would like to order a copy from Amazon, please click the link below:
