Tai Chi is a gentle but powerful form of exercise, which benefits people of all ages, contrary to the opinion that it is an exercise solely for the elderly!
In fact Tai Chi complements every lifestyle and, as explained very clearly in the introduction to the DVD, it helps one relax, clears one’s mind and allows one to become more focused and aware of oneself.
As well as an exercise in its own right, Tai Chi can be used to enhance one’s focus and endurance in other sports. This is how Tiffany Chen became involved, as it was suggested she follow the practice of Tai Chi from her father, to complement her figure-skating.
The DVD is made up of 60 movements, which are divided into 11 segments, each of which are repeated three times. The segments can either be played right through altogether or individually, which personally I prefer, as this enables you to select as many segments as you feel able to complete at one session. Learning about Tai Chi is all about repetition and ample opportunity is given for this in Step-by-Step Tai Chi.
Initially it is obviously better to work through the segments in sequence but as one becomes more proficient, it would be easy to select the different movements within the segments, ranging from “pressing” and “pushing” with the arms in the early stages to “turning round with a lotus leg kick” towards the end.
I particularly liked the “mirror option” facility, which can be selected within the DVD, because in this way it makes it easier to exactly “mirror” Tiffany Chen’s movements as she faces you on the TV screen.
Tai Chi’s series of slow, flowing movements have been changed and practiced over the years to cultivate health and balanced energy. It is claimed that, with regular practice, the health benefits are numerous; reduction in stress, increased flexibility, lower blood pressure, relief from chronic pain and improvement in sleep.
For anyone who wants to take up Tai Chi, I would recommend regular practice, possibly short bursts on a daily basis. Once the movements have been learned, then you can concentrate on the breathing and focusing your energy into the correct areas of your body. This will lead to greater relaxation and health benefits.
