National Lunchbox Week - help with healthy eating

publication date: Sep 1, 2008

According to the National Lunchbox Week statistics there are now four billion lunchbox occasions for everyone from primary school children to office workers, but it’s children’s lunchboxes that particularly get scrutinised.

However Sun Valley believe the best way to teach children is to lead by example so National Lunchbox Week is about more than just children, it’s about supporting everyone’s diet and helping to make eating healthily an easier and more enjoyable experience.

Sun Valley has a number of brands and products suitable for lunchboxes including You Are What You Eat, Pretz and Just.  Each of these is a healthy or healthier alternative which is Healthy Eating In Schools Approved with no added fat, salt, sugar (approved by the Health Education Trust – HET); and currently on sale in school canteens, vending and tuck shops and multiple retail.

National Lunch Box Week’s top five tips for healthy lunchboxes:

  • Reduce the use of butter and margarine or try to replace it all together with low fat mayonnaise or reduced fat spread.
  • Include a portion of fruit every day  –  alternatively pack a bag of dried fruits, a tasty and convenient way to enjoy one of your five-a-day.
  • Make your own salad box in the morning with fresh salad, vegetables and alternate toppings throughout the week grilled chicken, tuna, asparagus… For a bit of added crunch and flavour use a nut, fruit and seeds mix.
  • Rice is a great base for salad, try mixing in fruit, nuts, beans and vegetables for a tasty lunch alternative. The You Are What You Eat Sensational Seed Mix is packed with pumkin and sunflower seeds, pine nuts, goji berries and cranberries
  • Crisps are not the only convenient savoury snack - look for baked  snacks like Pretz which are less than a third of the fat of a standard packet of crisps and only 125 calories.
