UNICEF – time to share

publication date: Aug 13, 2011
UNICEFUNICEF UK has launched its new fundraising campaign Time to Share. As the famine in Somalia continues to spread, the campaign encourages Britons to make 1700 BST (British Sharing Time) the moment in time across the UK over the next week when people share a little of what they have to help weak and starving children across East Africa.

To mark the launch of Time to Share, a group of children gathered in Parliament Square at 5pm (17:00) earlier this week to empty £5 from piggy banks for the cause and encourage the British public to also donate £5 by texting SHARE to 78866 to help save children’s lives across East Africa.

Following the worst drought for 50 years, malnourished children desperately need help. UNICEF needs £114 million to make sure children across East Africa get the food, clean water and healthcare they need over the next six months.

UNICEF UK Deputy Executive Director Anita Tiessen said, “One girl or boy is dying of starvation every six minutes in Somalia. We urgently need the British public to share a little of what they have – £5 can feed a child for a week.

“The clock is ticking for children across East Africa and everything must be done to reach those in the worst affected regions as quickly as possible to prevent more children from dying.

UNICEF is the biggest provider of life-saving food for children in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti but needs more funds urgently to reach the hundreds of thousands of children affected by the food crisis.

To help save children’s lives please text SHARE to 78866. The £5 donation will help UNICEF feed a child for a week.
