A
recent survey showed that
one in ten parents does not think there is anything they can do to
protect their children from
childhood illnesses.
In
The Rough Guide to Childhood Illnesses Kaz Cooke in association with the
Department of Health has produced a parent-friendly guide. It's
easy to read – I did find the use of "kid" irritating – and offers
down-to-earth, practical information on everything from
dealing with common sniffles,
fever and tummy upsets to
more serious diseases like meningitis and
measles. With the recent
rise in cases of
measles it is worrying that
11 per cent of parents were unsure of the
symptoms. This book will help you
recognise symptoms for that and many other
childhood illnesses.
Parents can order a copy of
The Rough Guide to Childhood Illnesses for free by calling 0300 123 1002 or by visiting orderline.dh.gov.uk
The guide is
not intended as a replacement for
professional medical advice. If parents are in
any doubt at all they should call
NHS Direct on 0487 4647 or contact their local
GP’s surgery.
