How much alcohol do you drink? Do you ever think you should be drinking less? Probably we all should but it’s so easy to ignore the question - especially after a glass or two of wine!
Yet overindulging in alcohol can lead to serious health problems and can make family life much more stressful. Moderation is the key and this is certainly what Georgia Foster advocates in her book and workshops.
I had already read parts of her book, The Drink Less Mind™, before I went along to a workshop and I had met Georgia but I had no idea what to expect. I was a little apprehensive – as I’m sure the other attendees were but Georgia’s confident and empathic presence soon dispels any worries.
Who are the workshops for?
The sessions are totally confidential and there are no introductions. The workshop I attended was all female – and a variety of ages - but that is not always the case. All were well turned out, and from what I gleaned during interactive sessions, had good jobs. The point in common was that these women knew they were drinking too much and had invested in themselves by attending The Drink Less Mind™ workshop.
The workshop includes “brainstorming” sessions about why we drink alcohol and when we tend to overindulge. A whole range of ideas emerged - from stress to loneliness - and were discussed. Georgia believes alcohol is a symptom rather than the cause of heavy drinking and that we are drinking more than we would like to because of emotional habit – one which can be unlearned!
Nutrition tips
In the middle of the day nutritionist Gillian Hamer gives a talk on the adverse effects of excess alcohol on the body from digestive problems to liver damage and, interestingly, how you can support liver function nutritionally following an eight-step plan.
Hypnotherapy
During the day, there are four hypnotherapy sessions. These are deeply relaxing and support the issues Georgia has discussed. The hypnotherapy sessions allow the unconscious mind to absorb the suggestions Georgia makes so that you are able to achieve what you learn for the workshop. There is also a CD that comes with The Drink Less Mind™ book you are given which reinforces the hypnotherapy sessions.
Cutting down on alcohol
One thing we could all do to reduce our alcoholic intake is to have alcohol-free days and weeks plus to drink a glass of water between each alcoholic one.
What the workshop explores is why you might be drinking too much, what situations and emotions lead to this and how you can ring the changes and take control of your life. Attending a Georgia Foster workshop may be the best present you could ever give yourself - "because you're worth it"!
