New Skinny Jeans Gardeners

The Skinny Jean Gardeners started their green-fingered adventure on a council allotment followed by creating a kitchen garden at Jimmy Doherty’s farm, becoming ambassadors for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, designing a garden for the International Gardening World Cup in Japan and becoming green-fingered YouTube sensations.

“Growing your own makes every part of life taste better” is your goal.

Share some of The Skinny Jean Gardeners' tips for encouraging kids, teenagers and young adults into the garden:

1. Planning: What do you love eating? And what would you enjoy growing? There is no point in spending your time growing a vegetable or fruit that you will not eat.

2. Start small: Concentrate and look after a few plants first then move on to discovering something new.

3. Water water water: We do not want our seeds swimming, but these guys/gals, especially when seedlings will need a little drink, so it is good to keep on top of it.

4. Recycle: There is no need to spend a fortune. Recycling egg cartons, milk bottles, cardboard tubes and lolly pop sticks are a great - they all have their uses for any gardener, and they will certainly save you money.

5. Show it off: Show and tell what you have grown to family and friends! Talk about what you have learnt and see what tips you can share.

The Skinny Jean Gardeners will be at the BBC Gardener’s World Live Show from 16 to 19 June 2016. They will be giving expert advice on the VegTrug Grow Your Own Stage.
