Easter at IWM North: Bringing Stories to Life

publication date: Mar 30, 2012
Drop into Imperial War Museum (IWM) North for stories of wartime adventure throughout the Easter holidays. Special tales will be dramatised in family friendly What a Performance sessions. Immerse yourself in the story of a First World War Tommy, the journey of a hardworking war horse or the evacuation of Dunkirkduring the Second World War.

War HorseGather round with all the family for one of the daily Storytelling Sessions. Puppets and pictures bring to life true heroic and heart-warming tales of wartime animal bravery in Animals and War. Meanwhile rag doll Billy tells the tale of evacuation through dressing up and object handling in Billy’s War.

Those inspired by the current IWM North exhibition, Once Upon a Wartime, can join in the fun creative sessions based on their favourite characters; from making your own cheeky chimp mask from The Silver Sword  to learning about the role of horses in the First World War and creating your own equestrian artwork, based on Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. Visit Carrie’s kitchen, from Carrie’s War, to discover the truth about rationing in the Second World War and even measure out your own wartime ration of sweets.

Once Upon a Wartime, a major free exhibition which explores much loved children’s books about the war, is running at IWM North until 2 September 2012. Specially created by IWM, the exhibition is filled with all the drama of five acclaimed novels;  War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden, The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall, The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier and Little Soldier by Bernard Ashley. Explore these perilous stories alongside the history of real life conflicts from 1914 to the present day – all through the eyes of fictional children. On display for the first time are objects straight from Steven Spielberg’s War Horse film set, showing how the book became a film.

Carrie's WarTo celebrate this exhibition, IWM North is giving away five sets of books worth £20: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden and Little Soldier by Bernard Ashley.

To be in with a chance of winning a set of books just answer this question:
