When it comes to our children’s literature collection we have quickly fallen in to the brightly coloured rhyming field which has been lovely but I was excited to come across a book, Mini Rabbit Not Lost by John Bond, that offered something a bit different.
At first I wasn’t sure if the storyline – which features a small rabbit that goes on a journey to find some berries for the cake he wants to make with his mum - would be too complex for my two and a half year old. Mainly as I found you have to grasp some parts of the storyline from the pictures rather than the spoken words alone, something he hasn’t always been so great at.
Perhaps it’s his cake obsession, or the beautifully drawn illustrations but this book has become a firm favourite in our house and I often find him reciting parts, reading it to himself and putting it to the top of the bedtime story pile.
The illustrations by John Bond demonstrate depth and layers - with each time you read it you discover something new on the page. And the language is simple but effective ... with a definite emphasis on cake!
