River Rose and the Magical Lullaby by Kelly Clarkson
This is a beautiful bedtime story with lively illustrations, just right for sleepy children or children who have trouble sleeping like five year old twins, Daniel and Lottie.
Unable to sleep, River Rose embarks on a myriad of adventures with a variety of animals until ending at last with the sleepy polar bears who teach her their secret: "The trick to fun is to let the day be done". Now feeling ready for bed, Rose remembers the lullaby.
Having the original song available online to complement the book is a great idea. My first efforts at singing the song as I read the book were terrible. My singing is still terrible but at least now I know how the tune is supposed to sound!
The text is written in rhyme, always a plus for young children’s books. The twins loved it.

Little Inventions by Raphael Fejto
Dan and Lottie (almost six) were pleased to get copies of the Little Inventions published by Firefly Books. The six titles are: Glasses, French Fries, The Toilet, The Fork, Pizza, and The Pen.
It made a change having non-fiction books to read with them. As one could predict they were immediately grabbed by the one that deals with the toilet and, indeed, it does deal with the history of this invention in a fun and interesting way.
There is a memory game at the end of each book with simple questions on the information in the book. The text on each page is accompanied by a clear cartoon-like picture which has the addition of (usually humorous) speech bubbles.
There is enough humour and information in these books to inform and entertain the adults as well as the children. I particularly liked The Pen, The Toilet, and Glasses, but found the other three, by the nature of their inventions, the least stimulating.
However, with the twins, French Fries, Pizza, and The Pen seem to get the most outings. Particularly with Dan, who likes to take this set out to read when he is in bed (and should be going to sleep!).
They are in an A5 hardback size, just right for little hands and each title comes in a different bright colour making them an attractive addition to the bookshelf.
