Keith Souter's love for
science began at an early age when he was inspired by
Sir Patrick Moore and disappointed by a
science teacher who had no intention of teaching him how to make
stink bombs! What he did do was encourage him to
observe and
experiment.
Keith Souter went on to study
medicine but admits to being a bit of a
science teacher manqué – hence the writing of
Schoolboy Science Remembered.
This is a
great book to have on standby for your
older kids during holidays. Let them
dip into the contents and find an
experiment that would
appeal to them and then stand back. Some
supervision may be necessary but the
important thing is to let them have a go.
Experiments are clearly set out like a recipe –
Requirements, Method, Explanation.
There are plenty of "
magic tricks" to keep them busy and entertained plus they can have fun making
bath bombs or building a
crystal set radio.
Schoolboy Science Remembered contains all sorts of "did you knows" and
historical facts plus a useful
timeline of the history of science from 8,000BC up to 2008 – a good source of
facts if you are ever compiling quizzes! Plus there's a
comprehensive index.
Keith Souter's
conversational style is engaging and encouraging
– perfectly pitched for his target audience.
My only reservation about
Schoolboy Science Remembered is that it should include
schoolgirls! Don't let your
female youngsters be put off by the title! An
enquiring mind is all you need...
