The Cat and the King by Nick Sharratt is a perfect chapter book for emerging readers. Harriet – just starting Year 2 – loves it. She enjoys reading it and having it read to her.
It's a ridiculous tale that appeals to young senses of humour. The king of the title had lived happily in his castle with his best friend the cat with his staff until the Unfortunate Incident when a fire-breathing dragon burned the castle down. No one was hurt but all the staff ran away to find other jobs and the king and cat had to find somewhere to live with the few items they had managed to salvaged...
What follows is an amusing story of how the cat manages to give ordinary life a royal flavour. But had they really seen the last of the dragon?
Harriet laughs out loud at the cat's antics and at discovering where all the ex-castle staff are now working.
And at the end of the book there's an extra treat – the recipe for Royal Shortbread.
