No one likes to think about
dying and
writing a will may seem something that can be
put off to a later date. However you should
ensure that your
loved ones are provided for.
Making a will is normally a
straightforward exercise but this can be more
complicated if, for instance, you have children by a
previous partner. A marriage
revokes a will so though you may have
thought you left
your children provided for, on your death, your
new spouse may be the only
beneficiary. If both y
ou and your partner were to die and had failed to
appoint guardians for your children, courts could decide who should
raise them and this maybe by someone you
wouldn't have chosen.
Which? essential guides Wills & Probate is an excellent place to
start when considering
witing your will. This accessible and
well-written book gives the basics on
making a will and how to avoid
common mistakes. For instance if you
write your own will you may not be
specific enough or you may use the wrong form of words.
The first part of
Which? essential guides Wills & Probate is prviced guidance on the main provisions to make in a will and the second gives
step-be-step guidance on
probate.
The book also gives advice on
reducing your inheritance
tax bill and setting up a
trust.
Which? essential guides Wills & Probate also includes a discounted rate for Which? Wills Service which is valid until 30 June 2011. A
single will costs £79 (normally £89) and a "
mirror will" (individual wills for you and your partner normal price £129) will cost £119.
